Identifying an Ash Tree

The Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) is one of the UK's most recognisable native broadleaf trees. Ash trees can grow into large, impressive trees and are commonly found in woodlands, hedgerows, parks and gardens across Essex.

What to look for

Leaves:
Ash leaves are compound, usually with 7–13 pointed leaflets arranged in pairs along a central stem. The leaflets have serrated edges and are generally dark green during the summer.

Bark:
Young ash trees have relatively smooth grey bark. As the tree matures, the bark becomes darker and develops a distinctive network of ridges and fissures.

Seeds:
Ash produces clusters of winged seeds, commonly known as keys. They often remain on the tree into autumn and winter.

Branches and buds:
One of the easiest identification features is the arrangement of the buds. Ash buds are opposite each other and are usually dark, almost black in colour.
